Silver fillings can be replaced with tooth-colored composite fillings.
Silver fillings, also called amalgams, are applied to the teeth in order replace decayed tooth material. Over time, leakage and corrosion of the silver causes the filling to blacken. The tooth may appear dark and easily be seen when the mouth is opened. Composite fillings are generally used to fill smaller cavities or are used on the teeth of patients that are allergic to metal fillings. Composite fillings are matched to the color of the surrounding teeth so that the blend in, and they are less sensitive than silver fillings.
