Benefits of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are an effective way to repair chipping and wear, as well as misalignments, gaps, and unevenness in teeth. The veneer is a thin shell of porcelain that the dentist affixes to the front of a tooth to cover its flaws. Porcelain veneers can change the shapes of teeth with natural-looking results, and they can also be used to correct severely stained teeth by giving them new, white surfaces matched by shade to complement surrounding teeth.

Porcelain veneers provide our patients in Orange County, Westchester County, and surrounding New York areas with some notable advantages over other cosmetic bonding techniques. Natural teeth have a glossy sheen because of the layer of enamel encasing the dentin of the tooth. Light passes through the translucent enamel before reflecting off the dentin. Porcelain is a ceramic material that, by its nature, replicates the sheen and luster of natural teeth by interacting with light in a similar way. Because they are made of porcelain, veneers can be accurately color-matched to the teeth surrounding them so that they blend into a smile inconspicuously.

Unlike the materials used in dental bonding, porcelain veneers are resistant to stains. The porcelain, as a glass-like material, does not absorb stains as readily as other substances do, and as a result, patients receive long-lasting benefits from porcelain veneers. The Placement of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are placed in at least two dental appointments after the initial consultation. When more than one tooth needs a veneer, multiple porcelain veneers can be made and placed at the same time. Your dentist will use the first visit to prepare your teeth to receive the veneers. He or she will do so by removing about half a millimeter – the thickness of the veneer – of material from the tooth surface. After this step, an impression will be made of your tooth. This model will be used by a dental laboratory to construct custom-fitted porcelain veneers in between your appointments.

During the second appointment, your porcelain veneers will be customized further as the dentist places them onto and removes them from your teeth, each time trimming them so that they fit better in your mouth. The dentist will then polish and etch teeth and apply a special cement to bond the porcelain veneers to them. A light will be used to cure the cement quickly. Once excess bonding material is removed and any final adjustments are made to your porcelain veneers, they will be finished.
